Hearing is a vital sense linked with communication. We learn language primarily through audition and for those children with a hearing loss, the process of language acquisition may require additional support.

Some deaf children may develop bilingually (British Sign Language and spoken language) whilst others will focus more on an auditory/oral route. Communication mode can also change, for example, some children benefit from using signs as part of early communication but may opt for an auditory/ oral approach when they are older.
